Why Neck Pain Isn’t Just Neck Pain

Most all of us at one point or another have suffered neck pain. What you may not know is that neck pain that shows up more than twice a week may indicate that there could be more going on under the surface.

The reason we feel pain is because of our nerves. Our brain sends messages down our spinal cord and then out nerves that exit our spine to all areas of our body. In fact, only approximately 10% of all our nerves sense pain. Most nerve supply is to allow organs trusted tablets to function, movement, and our orientation to gravity.

When nerves become irritated, they begin sending messages to the brain to let you know there is a problem. When nerves become irritated they not only send messages to the brain, but the messages sent from the brain become altered, and nerve supply to organs and tissues becomes compromised.

Irritation to nerves especially those in the spine are a result of tight and tender muscles and misaligned vertebrae or what doctors of chiropractic call subluxations. Because tight muscles affect vertebral motion regular massage in addition to chiropractic care can aid in muscle function, recovery and maintain proper spinal alignment after a chiropractic adjustment.

Because the nerves exiting the neck control blood supply to the head, face, scalp, eye movements, inner ears, sinuses, muscles of the face, muscles of the throat, taste, heart function, digestive function, shoulder and arm movements, possible conditions/symptoms/problems that could arise include:

  • Headaches (Migraines, tension, cluster and other types)

  • Dizziness/vertigo

  • Some vision problems

  • Ear infection (otitis media)

  • Balance problems

  • Some swallowing problems

  • Frozen shoulder

  • Tennis elbow/gofers elbow

  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

  • Sinus infections

  • Bell’s Palsy

  • TMJ

  • Thoracic Outlet Syndrome

  • Other issues not listed

Chiropractors are nervous system doctors trained in the detection and correction of misalignments of the spine and other joints of the body known as subluxations. Subluxations interfere with our brains ability to communicate with the rest of our body and effect our ability to be healthy. They not only create pain but also influence organ function as well.

Acupuncture also influences nervous system function but goes about it in a different way than chiropractic. Doctors of Acupuncture or licensed acupuncturist use needles that are gently and carefully inserted at specific areas to influence function. Each modality is extremely useful and beneficial. However, when these modalities are combined it creates a synergistic action in which the results from the combined approaches can create even greater results than each one could on its own. Therefore we strongly encourage collaborative and integrative care at Healing Horizons in order for you to achieve superior results in your health related goals.
