The Use of Homeopathy in Pediatrics

Free Press Article – Joseph Ellerin  October 1, 2013

In my many years of practicing homeopathy, parents will occasionally ask me how they can help their families at home with homeopathic remedies. While I wouldn’t recommend a parent try to cure a child having chronic asthma with homeopathy, certainly there are many conditions that can be dealt with effectively with certain homeopathic remedies.

The fact of the matter is that homeopathy is a wonderful therapy that can be used to treat conditions such as: colds and the flu, teething, bed-wetting, night terrors, rashes, fevers, ear infections, pink eye and much more!

Homeopathy is a therapy that was discovered more than 200 years ago by a German physician, Samuel Hahnemann, who postulated that substances in nature that cause symptoms in healthy individuals will cure similar symptoms in sick individuals. Furthermore, these substances are so very diluted as to make them safe and non-toxic even if it does not directly address the targeted situation.

Although Western medicine offers treatments for many serious conditions, there are certain problems where your pediatrician will not have any answers. For example, as a rule, viral conditions do not respond to antibiotics. Fevers suppressed with aspirin or Tylenol can hinder your child’s immune system and leave it vulnerable to other viral conditions. As parents, we need more options. Homeopathy is a wonderful therapy that can fill that role.

When we use homeopathy, it is important to get as much information about the problem as possible. Some aspects which are used to find the right remedy are: the location of the issue, the sensation of pain or discomfort, any issues which characterize the problem such as what makes it better or worse, times of day or night it aggravates or improves, how weather or temperature affects the problem, what effect food and drink have, etc.

The cause of the problem can also point to the remedy. Arnica is a wonderful remedy for head injury or any soft-tissue injury. Aconite is used if a problem comes on from being exposed to cold, dry weather. Ledum is one of the first remedies to give in the event of a puncture wound.

Parents will sometimes ask if they can use homeopathy with over-the-counter medicines or antibiotics at the same time. Although not ideal, if a remedy is the right one it should work fairly quickly and shorten the time your child has to take the doctor’s prescription. Even if it is an emergency, it certainly can’t hurt to give a homeopathic remedy on the way to the hospital.

Responsibility for the right course of action still lies with the parents. If in doubt, always consult your pediatrician or family doctor. However, homeopathy is a safe and gentle therapy that offers too many benefits to be ignored in the treatment of medical problems and our efforts to keep ourselves healthy. Hopefully, many parents will experience the wonders of this amazing therapy and start using it to keep their families happy and healthy.
